~ Book Synopsis ~

I wish I could tell you that I was stolen.

Kidnapped off the street in some third-world country, sold against my will, while a desperate family back home waited and prayed and talked about me on the news.

I wish I could tell you that, because then you might understand.

What really happened? I walked to my fate with my eyes wide open. But before you say I deserved whatever happened to me, you should know. I was desperate. I was alone. I was afraid for my life. You would have done the same thing.

I thought things couldn’t possibly get any worse.

But then, I woke up in darkness, unable to move. There was only one thing I was sure of: I wasn’t alone anymore.

And then I heard HIS voice…

Add to Goodreads:

“Never say that word to me.”

I had never heard his voice like that. Not once. My blood chilled in my veins. If I thought I’d ever been afraid of Tate before, it was nothing. Absolutely nothing compared to this.

I’d wanted to unnerve him, but instead, I seemed to have unhinged him. Unleashed something I didn’t understand, and didn’t want to.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

“Too late,” he replied, his chest rising and falling rapidly with each breath. His tone was pure venom, pure sin, pure fucking evil. “Too late for apologies.”

In that moment, I had three choices.

I could fight him.

I could run.

Or, I could tie myself to the mast and meet him, measure for measure.

I chose the storm. With the hurricane himself standing there, his pulse pounding so loud I could almost hear it, I chose to stand tall.

What was happening? What was he about to do? I had no way of knowing, no way of guessing what he’d do. How he’d ruin me.

But I knew I could survive.

His hand lashed out and grabbed mine, lifting it to his face. Eyes half-lidded, he brought my fingers to his lips, my thumb pressing past them and up against his teeth. Finding resistance, for a moment, until he parted them and suckled it into the soft, wet heat of his mouth.

My Three Favorite Quotes from Pieces of Autumn

I’d like to tell you that I love all of my quotes equally, but it’s simply not true. I gotta play favorites. There are some moments in Pieces of Autumn that I enjoy more than others, so I thought I’d share them. But, shhh…don’t tell the rest of the scenes. They get jealous.

He laughed, ringing out loud and harsh in the room.

“You’re wrong,” he said, his voice low and rough. Dripping sex. “Compassion isn’t what you crave.”

This is my favorite dark romance trope. He knows what she wants, more than she does. Because it’s oh so wrong. The nice guys never get this, but the oh-so-bad boys definitely do.

The pain is a constant thing.

It’s not emotional. It is a deep and physical ache, lodged in my chest where no surgeon could ever hope to find it. It’s as real as a snake bite or a broken leg. It is not the sting of a whip or the heavy thud of a bat against my ribs, although I still have a twinge when I breathe in deep.

If all the broken things from my past were like vicious shards, embedded deep, an ache I’d grown used to – didn’t know how to live without –

Then Autumn was like a paper cut. Sharp and bright and sudden. Unexpected. Hurting more than it had any right to.

Tate’s point of view is relatively rare in the story, but this is one of my favorite moments. He’s essentially admitting that he’s in love with her. Because she’s different. Maybe the only thing he’s capable of feeling right now is pain, but at least she’s a new kind of pain.

“You’re pathetic.”

My tone was vicious. He stared at me, his eyes widening slightly.

“It’s all bullshit,” I shouted. His eyes flashed with anger, but he didn’t move. “You’re hiding behind a mask. You want absolution, but you can’t face what you did. So your way of forgiving yourself is to decide that you can’t help it. This is just who you are. But it doesn’t work, does it? Because you know it’s not true. You know you can do better. You’re just afraid to.”

Every romance needs a moment where the characters finally cut to the heart of the matter, and say what we’ve all been thinking. This one was personally cathartic for me, and I think it’s something that a lot of people do – not just Tate. It’s always easier to wallow. To keep doing what you’re accustomed to doing. What Tate’s doing is not sustainable, and it’s Autumn who dares to tell him so.

What’s your all-time favorite quote from a dark romance? Tell me about it in the comments!

Mad as Helen

Title: Mad as Helen (Road River Mystery)

Author: Susan McBride

Genre: Mystery, Crime, Thriller

Publish Date: July 29, 2014

Publisher: Witness Impulse an imprint of HarperCollins

In the second River Road Mystery from USA Today bestselling author Susan McBride, Helen Evans must find a killer before her granddaughter is arrested for murder!

When tiny River Bend, Illinois, is hit by a string of burglaries even Sheriff Frank Biddle can’t solve, the clients of LaVyrle’s Cut ‘n’ Curl can hardly talk of anything but. There are no signs of forced entry and no fingerprints, and valuables are missing from secret hiding places, as if the thief knew what he wanted and just where to look.

Helen Evans wonders what the world has come to if even their once-quiet town isn’t safe anymore. Then Grace Simpson, a big-city psychotherapist who had opened up shop in River Bend, is found dead on her bedroom floor, and Helen’s granddaughter is caught with the murder weapon in hand.

Sure of the girl’s innocence, Helen embarks on a little investigation of her own and turns up plenty of folks who aren’t grieving a bit now that Grace is dead …

This is my first book by Susan McBride, and now to be honest I want to seek out more of her mysterious.  Susan McBride has a way to add quirky to her intriguing mystery.  Everything from the plot line, to the zany characters to compose this great story makes it a high rating book.  This is no ordinary mystery.  Susan McBride adds some spice to her mystery.

Grace was the loyal psychologist.  She is the villain that you love to hate.  Unfortunately, for her demise so did most of the people in the town.  Grace had a manuscript that shed light to many conversations with clients.  Clients that all lived in this very small town.  This even included the sheriff’s wife.

Nancy was Grace’s assistant.  And let’s just say Nancy was probably very underpaid for all the abuse she took at Grace’s hand.  After being fired, Nancy goes the next morning to Grace’s home and finds her dead.  So what does Nancy do?  She just happens to carry out the weapon that killed Grace as the sheriff pulled up.  Now Nancy is the suspect.  But could the whole town be a suspect as well?

Helen is Nancy’s zany, nosy grandmother.  She is determined to help the sheriff clear her grand daughters name, and also catch the real killer.

I enjoyed how Susan McBride portrayed the characters and the town.  I had quite a few chuckles reading about the beauty salon where everyone gossiped.  Susan brings in the taste of small town feeling when she wrote this novel.  I honestly believe her characteristics of the town and people made the story so unique.

The story is fast moving, and is clear about what is happening at all times.  You are never left confused at where the story line is going.

I know after reading Mad As Helen, I will be seeking out more stories.  A must read for mystery buffs.

Title:   Evelyn

Author:   Tracie Podger

Release Date:  July 28, 2014

Tour Hosted by: Passionate Promotions

Kindle cover Evelyn-3-2

~ The Background ~

Evelyn is a pivotal character in books 1 and 2 of the Fallen Angel Series.  In books 1 and 2, readers learn a little of her background, how she met principal characters Robert Stone and his best friend Travis, and how she became such an integral part of their lives.  But that is far from all there is to know about this wonderful character. She has her own story to tell, and it’s a powerful one.

If you’ve read the Fallen Angel series, you know that every character has secrets ~ sometimes bittersweet, sometimes utterly devastating, even tragic; and as their secrets unfold, the story deepens with a passionate intensity, weaving the characters’ lives together with bonds that cannot be broken.  In every character’s life, choices must be made, and very often the past not only determines the choice, but produces its outcome, especially given the complexities of “family culture” explored in the Fallen Angel series.

In this novella, Evelyn tells her story, ultimately connecting it to the sequence of events as they unfold in Fallen Angel 1 and Fallen Angel 2.  As you read it, it is easy to imagine sitting across a table in a quiet cafe’, sharing a bottle of chianti, listening as Evelyn tells her story, her way.

Contemporary romance for readers over the age 18. Although part of the 5* Fallen Angel Series, this novella can be read as a standalone.

The Synopsis ~

Evelyn was sixteen years old when she fell in love. She fell in love with a murderer.

Rocco has been sent from Italy to live with the Morietti family in Washington, DC, for his safety, for his protection. He hadn’t banked on meeting the beautiful, but young, Evelyn, the daughter of the man who has given him refuge. He hadn’t banked on falling in love.

How hard is it to love the daughter of the man who holds your fate in his hands? And once you fall, how hard is it to keep your love a secret? Which is the greater threat to them both, to keep their secret, or to admit and fight for each other?

Evelyn and Rocco are forced to accept a life of secret meetings, lies, love and loss. Few relationships can survive it, and not every romance has a happy ending. But if there is a chance……. is it not worth a try?

This is the story of young love, of dreams and hopes for a future not possible. This is the story of Evelyn.

For those who have kept up with the Fallen Angels Series, we all have fallen in love with Evelyn.  Evelyn has deserved to have her voice heard, and this is her story.  A story full of young love, hope of a future, with a storm that will forever change her life.

Now if you have not read the Fallen Angels Series, you are surely missing out on a great series.  It is a must read series for action pack lovers that enjoy sizzling steam.

Evelyn has always seemed real sad in a way when we read about her throughout Fallen Angel and Fallen Angel II.  Now we know why.  We also have heard the name Rocco mentioned.

Rocco worked for Evelyn’s father, but he had a past in Italy he was staying away from.  As Evelyn matures she finds herself hopelessly in love with Rocco.  And Rocco is the man that she wants to be her first everything.  I found myself in love with their relationship.  And I will tell you as the story concludes and we understand the loyalty that Evelyn has for Robert and Travis my heart fractured in a million pieces.  I wanted to scream for the life Evelyn would never have, but also rejoice for the two boys that healed her hurt soul.  When I finished reading Evelyn, I went back and read the series and now I have so much more compassion for the two rough alpha men (Travis and Robert).

Now I really am anxious for a HEA for Travis.  The original three musketeers deserve their life of love, loyalty, and redemption.  I know there is Fallen Angel III that Tracie is working on, and I am hoping we get to see more of Travis in it.

Fallen Angel Series has been a 5+ Star Series.

Amazon | Barnes And Noble

Scared to Death was a well written novel on a love worth of eternity if only the participants were not Scared to Death to allow the love to blossom.

Ruby has lost quite a bit in her short life.  But what she hasn’t lost is her friendship with Noah.  That is until they cross the line, and Ruby fears that she is not good enough for Noah and pushes him away.  Hateful words are said, and forever too many friends are now affected by this change of event.  Will time heal all wounds, or will the past replay itself again?

Ruby and Noah are the perfect main characters.  They chemistry is shown through the words.  And I enjoyed the interaction between Norse, Kelsey, and Rachel.  And I also loved Rachel and Noah’s grandpa.  What a wonderful idea he had to own a wax museum.  I loved how the author used visuals to describe the work he did, as well as the costumes Noah designed.  I also wanted to cry at all the heartbeat that this group goes through.  I have a feeling we will see more in the future.  At least I am hoping so.  Norse would be a great character to write about next.  In helping out his family one day he experiences tragedy that will forever change every part of his life.  My heart broke for that man.

I loved the love story of Ruby and Noah.  When I saw them interact for the positive, I wanted to cheer.  Ruby though made some poor choices, and Anthony was one of them.  But she survived, and didn’t allow him to beat her down for long.

The story is fast paced from beginning to end.  I enjoyed how there was no lag at all throughout the story line.

I cannot wait to see more from this author.  Scared to Death is definitely a must read for all.

About The Author

I was born on a cold day in January. They said I was the only baby in the hospital. They also said that I picked my head up twice to turn away from people who came to see me after I was born (Who wants strangers looking at you after such a life altering event while you are naked?). Not much has changed. That cold day was 30 years ago in South Carolina. Needless to say, I got the twang! At the ripe age of 22, I married my man bear pig hubby who happens to be from Chicago. I learned that there are people who do not have accents, who sound like they have accents because they don’t have accents. Mind blowing there. Our love story is pretty nifty. I met him online when I was 15 and chatted with him for four years, on and off as friends, until we met and I showed him some southern charm and BAM! Here we are ten years later with eight years of marriage and several fur persons rounding out the family thus far! My writing started as a child when I tried to write about three pewter statues of wizards coming to life. Books and words have always been a passion for me. My mind is incredibly random, if you talk to me for more than ten minutes, it becomes painfully obvious. I draw inspiration from absolutely anything and everything I come in contact with, with particular emphasis on music, pictures and the crazy situations in life. It is my hope one day to have a small hot air balloon tied to my chimney so I can write by starlight. I am pretty sure I would find that most inspiring.

Screams erupted from my phone, it woke me up. When I made my eyes focus on the screen, the ringing or screaming had stopped. A notification popped up showing a new voicemail.

“Did you wake up for the phone?” Ruby asked, standing in my doorway.

“No.” I had to clear my throat to get the sound out.

“Well, the damn thing woke me up.” She grumbled, shuffling her feet.

“Sorry.” I offered, throwing a hand behind my head. She was in her normal ratty pj’s, a Grateful Dead shirt and cut off shorts.

She stared at my bare chest.

“I’m up here,” I pointed with my free hand.

“I was playing connect the dots with your tattoos.” Her eyes drifted to mine. Her excuse was cute. Almost as cute as her. I knew she was going to run.

“It’s 8am.” She sighed, turning to go back to her room.

“Ru.” I called, reaching out my free arm to pat the bed beside me.

She lifted her brow, questioningly.

“When was the last time you washed your sheets?” She asked, taking a few steps in the room.

“I want to watch cartoons.” I ignored her comment.

“It is Saturday.” She smiled, lifting the covers to crawl under them. Before I realized what she had done, she had snatched the pillow from under my head.

“I don’t know if I want to watch cartoons with you anymore.” I threatened, causing her to laugh. It was a good sound to hear, it hadn’t changed since we were kids, deep and throaty.

“You invited me in.” She said in a mock Dracula voice. “Now you must accept your fate!”

“Much like you must accept yours!” I roared, throwing back the covers to grab her. She squealed as I leaned over running my fingers across her ribs.

“If you don’t stop, I am going to pee on your bed.” She spoke in between fits of giggles.

“Then I would have to rub your nose in it.” I continued to torture her.

She pushed up off the bed, grabbing at my hands, which had moved to her back. Her chest banged into mine while she fought to pin my hands to the mattress. The side of her face smacked me hard on the nose.

“Fuck.” I let go of her to reach for my throbbing nose.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Let me see.” Her hands were pulling mine away from my face. I had closed my eyes because she hit me so hard it brought tears.

“Noah, let me look.” She pulled harder on the hand remaining on my face. I had to let go because I was losing my balance. If she pulled again, I was going to fall on top of her. I moved my hand to press both of them onto the mattress on either side of her.

“Do I still have a nose or did you flatten it with your big head?” I asked with my eyes still closed.

A hand slapped me on the chest.

My eyes popped open to see her face just a couple of inches from mine.

“You hit me in the titty.” I pouted, she didn’t laugh. She opened her mouth slightly pulling her bottom lip in; I watched the skin turn white as her teeth bit down.

“It’s not really fair you are the only one who gets to chew on you.” I said, leaning towards her. Her mouth had opened in shock or to say something, but I cut her off.

Review: Outside the Box (4.5 STARS) by Rochelle Paige Blog Tour

Outside the Box Tour_Banner

Title: Outside the Box (Blythe College, #3)

Author: Rochelle Paige

Release Date: July 22, 2014

Aubrey earned her love ‘em and leave ‘em reputation with her serial dating past. A pregnancy scare makes her see the light and change her ways. She gets serious about school and stops dating – until she meets Luka and falls head over heels for him.

Luka doesn’t trust easily after having his heart crushed by the girl next door. When he meets Aubrey, he doesn’t think she’s relationship material because of her past – even though he’s drawn to her.

What happens when the girl who always ran the moment a relationship got serious meets The One? Will Aubrey be able to get Luka to see her Outside the Box he’s put her in?

The Blythe College series has been one of the best series I have read.  Outside of the box is just as exceptional as the rest.  It also has a sport that I am in love with – hockey!!!!  For those that have kept up with the series this is Aubrey’s story.

Aubrey has been unlucky in love.  She has been known as a serial dater.  Rumors are just that-only half truth told.  Yes, Aubrey has dated, but she isn’t as bad as the stories are told.

Luka had a high school sweetheart that cheated on him.  When he and Aubrey are placed together for tutoring, Luka wants to stay away from being hurt again.  With Aubrey’s history Luka is a little bit wary of dating her.  Can Aubrey change his mind?

I enjoyed how we get to see the same characters as we saw in previous novels.  It is a pleasure to reunite them all again in Outside the Box.  With the addiction of Luka and his good friend Jason, it added more flavor to the story.  Jason is the quirky friend that pumps Luka up.  He knows how to help Luka when he is down.  Hockey is what unites them, but friendship combines those two young men.  Jason was a key player in the relationship between Luka and Aubrey.  Some of it good, and some of it not so good.

As I mentioned the characters previously, I also want to touch upon the dialogue in the book.  I felt like I was involved in the story.  I could tell the more I read the more immersed I became with the story line.  It was almost like I was in the room.  Aubrey deserved a HEA, and I really hoped that Luka would give her one.  Somehow, I have a feeling we might see more of the dynamic duo in a future story.

I am so excited to see what is in story for the future of Blythe College.

“Oomph,” I grunted into a hard chest as warm hands grasped my arms to steady me. I took a deep breath and a woodsy scent that was somehow both spicy and a little bit sweet hit my nose. I didn’t think I’d ever met a guy who smelled this good before.

“You okay?” a deep voice murmured.

“Yes,” I whispered as I looked up into green eyes, my hands resting against his chest.

“Good. Wouldn’t want to start my night off by mowing down defenseless women, now would I?” he asked as I moved away.

I couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled up at that since I’m the one who ran into him. “No, we certainly wouldn’t,” I said as I stepped into the elevator.

I watched his ass, lovingly hugged by his jeans, as he walked away with a couple of guys I hadn’t even noticed. And just like that, my libido jumped back to life. Holy fucking shit.

Yet she’s never met the Authentic Raven face-to-face. Imitations like Ven only get to leave the lab when they’re needed—to replace a dead Authentic, donate an organ, or complete a specific mission. And Raven has never needed Ven . . . until now.

When there is an attack on Raven’s life, Ven is thrust into the real world, posing as Raven to draw-out the people who tried to harm her. But as Ven dives deeper into Raven’s world, she begins to question everything she was ever told. She exists for Raven, but is she prepared to sacrifice herself for a girl she’s never met?

The Dominion of Atalanta is at war. But for eighteen-year-old Aris, the fighting is nothing more than a distant nightmare, something she watches on news vids from the safety of her idyllic seaside town. Then her boyfriend, Calix, is drafted into the Military, and the nightmare becomes a dangerous reality.

Left behind, Aris has nothing to fill her days. Even flying her wingjet—the thing she loves most, aside from Calix—feels meaningless without him by her side. So when she’s recruited to be a pilot for an elite search-and-rescue unit, she leaps at the chance, hoping she’ll be stationed near Calix. But there’s a catch: She must disguise herself as a man named Aristos. There are no women in the Atalantan Military, and there never will be.

Aris gives up everything to find Calix: her home. Her family. Even her identity. But as the war rages on, Aris discovers she’s fighting for much more than her relationship. With each injured person she rescues and each violent battle she survives, Aris is becoming a true soldier—and the best flyer in the Atalantan Military. She’s determined to save her Dominion . . . or die trying.

Title:  Shannon’s Gift: A Story of Love, Loss, and Recovery

Author:   Nate Bennett
Genre: Grieving, loss, love story
Publish Date:   June 1, 2014

~ Book Synopsis ~

In this raw, emotional memoir, Nate Bennett shares the blog he maintained to work through his grief over the sudden loss of his wife Shannon. He is surprised and comforted to discover a vast virtual community of support. His blog posts—alternately poignant and of dry wit—eventually attracted tens of thousands of hits and a following from readers who hadn’t known the couple. This unique book gives the reader a window into the starkness of a widower’s grieving experience in real time. What comes through in virtually every post is his love for Shannon as he weaves in vignettes from their life together, chronicling their love story and his efforts to recover. And in the end, with the support of his virtual community and the strength he was able to draw from remembering Shannon’s wishes for him, he finds love again.

Add to Goodreads:

Shannon’s Gift, written by her husband Nate Bennett, is a compelling story of the loss of a magnificent woman and the healing her family went through.  Nate documents through a blog how his wife passed and the first year after her passing.  We also get to see responses of others to her passing by emails, and posts others made on his blog.

Shannon’s Gift was raw and open.  I read it during a hard time as I lost my foster father during the time I got the book to read.  My foster parents were married as long as Nate and his wife.  But the story was healing to me to see that while the pain of loss is there, that healing does occur.  I also lost my biological father almost 5 years now, and I saw some of what I experienced through Nate’s words.  In addition I noticed where I missed on healing, and the words Nate used brought a comfort to me that I could still heal from both my biological father as well as my foster father.

If I were to tell the reader what makes this novel worth reading is that once you start the story it is impossible to put down.  The reader learns of what Shannon was diagnosed with in college (Mitochondrial Disease), and Nate’s words on what the disease is and what is consists of I know your heart will break as mine did.  We also feel the anger at what happened during the last hours of Shannon’s beautiful life.  The unfairness of her last care was one that fueled me to want to tangle with the Medical Director at the hospital Shannon was at.

After reading Shannon’s Gift I have elected to help donate to the foundation that helps research the disease the afflicted Shannon’s still young life.  Maybe through effort scientists will find ease for patients that have this disabling disease.

I give a standing applause to Nate Bennett for sharing this beautiful story with readers.  In doing so he has allowed others to heal through his vivd words.

About the Author

In the fall of 2011, Nate lost his wife of 26 years in a shocking turn of events. She’d just had an outpatient procedure on her shoulder and the doctor sent Nate to get the car to bring her home. In the next few minutes, things went terribly wrong. Shannon collapsed, never to recover. After more than a week in a critical care unit in pursuit of a cure, Nate honored Shannon’s wishes and had her life support discontinued and she died shortly later. Nate’s book, Shannon’s Gift, is the result of the blog Nate kept during Shannon’s hospitalization and after her death. Initially, the purpose of the blog was to keep friends and family informed of Shannon’s condition. Quickly, though, the blog became Nate’s catharsis and a way to stay connected to a web of supporters.

After the sudden loss of his wife, Nate was surprised and comforted to discover a vast virtual community of support. His blog posts – alternately expressing poignancy and dry wit – eventually attracted tens of thousands of readers and a following from people around the world that didn’t even know Nate or his wife. The unique book gives the reader a window into the starkness of a widower’s grief in real time and a look at how social media has changed grieving in today’s world. In the end, with the support of his virtual community and the strength he was able to draw from remembering Shannon’s wishes for him, he finds love again.

While Nate is new to the personal memoir genre, he is co-author of two management books, “Riding Shotgun: The Role of the COO” and “Your Career Game: How Game Theory Can Help You Achieve Your Professional Goals.” Both are books published by Stanford University Press. Additionally, his research has been published in respected scholarly journals such as the Academy of Management Review, the Academy of Management Journal, Psychological Bulletin, and the Journal of Applied Psychology. He has also published in many widely read resources for managers including the Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, and

Jenna’s point of view

“Want a taste of my delicious beef?” His lips curled up into a sexy smirk.

I knew he meant the beef stew, but I knew there was a double meaning behind what he was asking me. Before I could say a word he placed his finger in my mouth and let it slowly slide out.

“You’re a great cook,” I commented, letting my tongue seductively glide across my lips while savoring the taste of the sauce.

“I’m good at lots of things,” he said as if matter of fact, watching my tongue move across my lips again.

“Aren’t we confident?” I said, leaning back just a tad back to push my breast toward him. I wanted Max to touch me.

“Arrogant,” he said. “I can be very arrogant. And I am very damn good at making Jenna feel good.”

Suddenly Max dabbed a splat of sauce on my neck. “I think I’ll try some Jenna sauce.” Oh God! His tongue was working perfectly on that spot on my neck. My breath heaved and quickened when he dripped some more sauce between my breasts.
