 ~ Synopsis ~

Man’s best friend is about to become America’s worst enemy…

When a sudden rash of deadly canine attacks hits the greater Miami area, Lieutenant “Ghost” Walton, Special Ops, takes little notice. Blame it on the heat, a rare disease, or the fact that people just don’t know how to take care of their pets.

But when the body count rises, and the perimeter of blood and carnage spreads wider and wider, into the farthest reaches of Miami-Dade county, Ghost has no choice but to pay attention. Doggedly, he tries to uncover the link between these lethal incidents, but he doesn’t count on falling for a sassy out-of-towner with a dark past, nor does he expect to stumble onto a plot that threatens national security.

The China Dogs is a novel full of action packed, suspense filled thriller.  The story even contains an element of romance without it being overbearing.  It just adds to the story.

The basis of the novel is that there is an epidemic of violent dogs going on a rampage.  And I mean abnormally violent.  To the point that the dogs have to be shot several times before they die.  The start of this rampage is in Florida.  Ghost has been called onto the job to figure out what is going on.  Zoe, a girl he met after a bank robbery, decides to do her own bit of detective work on what is happening with these dogs.  Ghost is determined to end what is happening with these flesh eating dogs.

I don’t want to spoil the book so I won’t give to much away, but I will say that through the whole book I was having to remember to breathe.  It is a bit graphic so please be aware of that.  But the story is extremely worth the read.  I enjoyed how everything seemed to fit together perfectly.

The character’s are relatable, and I enjoyed how well Sam Masters defined each of them.  The hero and heroine are characters that you find you want to root for and desire to see end well.

The plot is catching and captures your attention from beginning to end.  The story flows well, and I never was left confused or in a lull at any moment.

After reading The China Dogs I definitely will be on the lookout for more of Sam’s books.  The China Dogs offers intrigue in a way that truly makes this mystery rate high.  Definitely a novel for mystery buffs.

A Beautiful Thought is a compelling story of family, fresh starts, and finding love.  To be honest, I have now read it three time.  It is definitely a swoon worthy book.  I can say it is on my top favorite books to read.  Alicia Rae wrote a novel that will be thought of and remembered for time to come.

I loved the premise of the story.  Gail works hard to help her family.  She has an autistic sister that the parents need financial help to assist   The sister is adorable, and is fun to read about.  Gail worked so much that she really didn’t have a life.  Her family and friends were her life.  In addition, Gail was wary of relationships with men.  She had been hurt extremely bad.

Situation changes for Gail and she needs to find a way to help financially.  Abby recommends Damon, Jason’s brother, to be her roommate.  Not an easy decision for Gail, but she decides yes.

There is sizzle between Damon and Gail.  Damon though has an uphill road to show he is different than other men.  Can Gail believe him?  Will Damon be the glue to Gail?  Damon had a choice whether to stay in town or leave.

The characters from previous stories are still in the picture, and they are fun to read about. Family whether blood or not is important to each and everyone of them.  They are a close group and when one is in trouble everyone bands together to help.

I highly recommend that readers one-click this story and read Gail and Damon’s story.  It is a repeat reader.

It began a decade ago with a spilt drink and a missed opportunity amongst two people destined to be together. Now ten years on, sexually frustrated Lucia Myers is seeing her friend as though it were the first time…

Everything changed that Tuesday night when Lucia Myer’s millionaire best friend Sebastian Silver returned home after months working abroad. She took one look at his spine-tingling face and in that moment he stole her breath away, for the second time in a decade…

As a single-mother, her priorities have changed; the only man in he life is her 3year old son Finn. Encouraged by her girlfriends she’s begun to date, but now, staring at Seb with fresh eyes – his appearance suddenly unfamiliar to her and physique making her mouth water; Lu decides that he should be the one to encourage her inner wantonness. What were friends for – if not to help when one was in need?

She forms a plan… a proposition of sorts; one night of pleasure, I’m open to anything, with no ties – the text reads. It couldn’t have been simpler.

She wants to be awakened by someone she can truly trust; one with a skilled repertoire with the ladies and one who will never want more from her – cue Sebastian – the ultimate alpha player!

Sebastian accepts her offer, but only on his terms, introducing rules that she must adhere to. He decides where, when, and that one night would not be enough to truly take Lucia to new heights and show her how it should be really be done! One month it is then…

The heat between them is scorching; the constant fight for control undeniable, as they struggle between the blurred lines of the term ‘mates’. Together they sizzle, but apart they are broken. They must become strangers, and forget their friendship to become lovers, for Lucia to fulfill her desires and for Sebastian to awaken her in a way no other man has achieved.

Soon their time will come to an end; can they ever go back to just being friends?

Forces from their past and present try to destroy their future and all the while, Lucia has this feeling that she is being watched, by another…

The One awakened is romantic, seductive, witty, full of angst, and will make you wish you had your very own Sebastian Silver to proposition.

The One Awakened is a story of enlightenment, full of angst, and has a tint of mystery to it.  It takes the reader on a exploration of their own emotions.

What can a person say about Sebastian.  He is sexy, funny, but quite the playboy.  He also is a commitment-phobe.  Mom may love him, but dads will have their shot guns ready for when their daughter’s hearts are broken.

Lucia needs some spice in her life.  Her current life involves a adorable little 3 year old man named Finn.  When Sebastian comes into town, Lucia decides Sebastian is just the man to spice up her life, but will it cost their friendship?

The past and future collide and things will never be the same for Sebastian and Lucia.  I am really needing the second book soon to see how Sebastian will get out of yet another mess.

I enjoyed watching how the characters interacted with each other.  My actual favorite characters were Abby and Nathan.  Abby always seemed to have a sound mind, and could provide reason to Lucia.  Lucia just doesn’t listen very well.  Nathan is really not like his brother much.  He goes for what he wants and doesn’t play games.

I will say there is a bit of a cliff hanger.  I am craving more from all of these characters.

The plot line is actually quite great.  Can best friends cross the line and still be okay?  We will find out by the end of the trilogy.  Somehow I have a feeling that Sebastian has some moves up his sleeves.  I hope so at least.

What really happened? I walked to my fate with my eyes wide open. But before you say I deserved whatever happened to me, you should know. I was desperate. I was alone. I was afraid for my life. You would have done the same thing.

I thought things couldn’t possibly get any worse.

Pieces of Autumn has been a wonderful novel for me to review about.  I will tell you that it is not your easy go lucky girl meets boy story.  It full of deep darkness.  On a literary standpoint the writing is brilliant.  I am so impressed with how an author could take a subject so dark and bring light with meaning to the story in the end.

The story has three main huge conflicts written in it.  The external conflict being human trafficking.  There are two internal conflicts: one, being if a person would sell their soul and body for food and a roof over their head.  The second internal conflict deals with good versus evil.  And how the three are intertwined a work of genius.  I don’t think anyone could write this any better.

I will be honest though and say that I initially struggled when I first started reading Pieces of Autumn.  I couldn’t imagine anyone experiences such horrific events that Autumn had to go through.  I am not going to share what they are because you will need to find that out.

The story is major time packed with suspense, and full of twists and surprises that could knock most readers off their chair.  You never could settle down because you never knew what was going to happen next.

As I mentioned that Pieces of Autumn is a dark romance, so please be aware that there is graphic situations written in.  But I will let you know that it was extremely worth going through reading the dark times to get to the light.

Book Trailer:

Penny moves back to Miami to start her a job with a list of things to accomplish.

  1. Find a place to live.
  2. Avoid her gold-digging mother.
  3. Reconnect with old high school friends: her best friend Sandra, the dramatic Eva, the dark Michael, her half-brother Wyatt, and her former crush Jay.

Jay may have kept her firmly in the “friend zone”, but that didn’t stop her from wanting more. Her five friends have stood by her through some difficult times and she’ll need their help now to accomplish her first two goals.

As soon as Jay sees Penny, he puts his plan into motion. His investors need to see him with a stable woman, one who isn’t all flash and no brains; Penny fits the bill perfectly. There’s just one hitch—he wants more.

Their pretend date sets off a whirlwind of plots. From mothers who want to control their children’s lives to the loss of her exciting new job, Penny’s world turns upside down. She knows she can overcome all obstacles except one—she’s falling for Jay all over again.

Favorite Coffee, Favorite Crush is a fantastic book with loads of romance, much mystery, and tons of action.

Penny returns home to Miami to start a new job.  Upon her arrival she meets up with her college crush, John Jay.  Jay is the ultimate catch.  He is smart, sexy, and extremely determined.  Jay proposes a deal to Penny.  Help her find a place to live in exchange for pretending to be his girlfriend for business meetings.  Problem is the place to live is with Jay.  Keeping in mind Penny’s desire for Jay, would you want to room with a man you crush and have him bring home girls?  Understandably, Penny is cautious about this arrangement.

It has been Penny’s dream to be Jay’s girl, but how can she handle pretending when Jay gives you soft caressing touches, and gentle stolen kisses.  For Penny trying to figure out what reality is can be a full time job.

Things are not going well for Penny, and she doesn’t want to admit failure.  What she has planned has gone up in smokes.  And to top it off her male attention seeking mother is at her throat to become someone she isn’t.  And Jay is being secretive about what is happening in his life.

There are many elements to the story that are enjoyable.  The first being that there is a resolution to the conflict, but let me tell you the ending will shock you to your very core.  Lives will be changed forever at the end of the story.

Another element that increases this story rating is how the character’s were defined in the book.  The hero and heroine have a chemistry that you could feel through the words.  Some of the chemistry the reader can project while reading in between the lines in the story.  The secondary characters help build the hero and heroine to a level where you know more about their personality, and how they relate to each other as well as their friends.  For secondary characters, my favorite was Sandy.. She was the peace seeking mediator.  I would love to see a story about Sandy.  She has some history that might be interesting for the reader.

I really hope to see more from this Victoria Pinder.  I believe readers would enjoy more from the great cast in Favorite Coffee, Favorite Crush.  Well done Victoria!!!

Chapter One

Jay Marshall pressed his lips together as he held the phone. His hands curled into a ball then straightened. He stared out his bay windows overlooking the ocean. Another beautiful day on the beaches of South Florida, not that he cared. Sunshine never filled him with joy. The humidity outside suffocated the spirit, but somehow, with this deal, he’d break free.

“Yes, you’ll see I mean business, Mr. Danvers. My business plans are long term.”

Danvers sucked in his breath, as if he were doubting the sincerity of Jay’s words, then told Jay. “And I’ll meet your girlfriend. It’s always telling with people from Miami. Flashy women and cars do not make good investments on my end.”

Jay gritted his teeth and tugged at his free ear, but kept the phone on the other. Miami advertised plastic women on the highway as a special brand. Flashy came with the area code. Instead he nodded his head and told the potential investor, “I understand. See you next week.”

He hung up the phone and stared out the window. The brightness showed his reflection and his grim frown. Jay needed to win. His eyes squished together. He¹d pay the price for success. He had no other choice.

Jay’s mind raced to his technical girlfriend. Eva was the epitome of flashy, beautiful, and fake. She’d been a friend since high school, and two months ago, they¹d ended up dating. On paper the award winning dramatic actress, his money, and their history should be a match. Yet he couldn’t imagine his entire life videotaped.

If he walked away from her, there would be no regrets. His investors hoped he had a nice, sweet woman on the side. His cousin and her friend, Penelope, flashed in his head before he dropped the thought.

He pushed his hand on the glass window before he stepped back into the shadows of his office.

Darkness didn¹t suit him either. Nothing stirred inside him anymore, though he craved something. Anything other than boredom from the sticky heat of his life.

He shook his head and poked his head out of his office. His secretary sat there typing. “Call Eva. Set up an appointment for us to talk today.”

With the click of the door knob he rolled up his sleeves. He needed the deal to put his goals in line with his investment portfolio.

His eyes narrowed in on the first words, long term growth.

Long term read to his eyes like a rescue rope. He blinked. Life should be lived with long term goals to reach. Freedom meant change.

Today, he’d break up with Eva. In his heart, he’d always hoped for a woman that tugged at his heart strings. But hopes didn’t earn freedom. He’d prove to himself, and the others, John Jay Marshall came out of the game of life on top.

Warning: Graphic sex and violence. Age 18+ only

It is recommended to read after Deliver, but it can be read as a stand-alone.

Her life is like a prison cell.

A self-made, to-hell-with-the-free-world existence that locks from the inside.

Stop judging. Her agoraphobia doesn’t define her. It simply keeps her safe.

He belongs in a prison cell.

The 6×8, make-me-your-bitch variety that locks from the outside.

But he’s free. To hunt. To take. To break.

And he just found a sexy new toy.

Capturing her is the easy part. Her fucked-up mind, however, makes him question everything he does next.

But he’s a determined bastard. If all goes his way, this will hurt like hell.

Pam Goodwin writes a telling story of someone who is considered evil turning into a different type of person.  If you haven’t read Deliver than you have missed out on a treat.  Deliver has the same characters, but goes to what happened a certain amount of time after the slave ring.  Vanquish is a stand alone.  To be honest though, I highly suggest you read Deliver first though.  For me reading Deliver first added to the richness of Vanquish.

Van desires to see his daughter and he misses Liv.  He knows that if Liv finds him he is toast.  How can he ever get Liv to agree to allow him to see his daughter?

Van is stalking Liv’s home.  During that time he finds agoraphobic Amber is hiding in her house, and Van desires to have her as his prisoner.  His dark side is winning over the need to change.  Van must decide whether to change his evil ways, or risk his future forever.

The story can be very dark.  There is graphic violence and sex that at times is forced.  If this bothers you that Vanquish might not be the book for you.  I will tell you though that it is a fantastic book.  I enjoyed catching up with the characters of Deliver.  It was fascinating to see how the lives of those affected by the sex trafficking ring was changed for the future.

I look forward to reading more by Pam Goodwin.

“Are you going to cut me up in little pieces?”

A cold smile tipped his lips as he chuckled. Then his expression sobered. “Walk to the kitchen.”

Fucking psychopath. He stood right in the doorway, taking up the whole damned hall. At over six feet tall with a muscled body cut from stone, he could squash her without breaking a sweat. She didn’t want to go near him. He was terrifying. But being forced outside was worse. She straightened her back and headed toward him.

As she slid by, his arm caught her waist and yanked her back against his chest. She slapped at his hand, bucking against him, and his arm clenched tighter. His erection jabbed against her backside, his breath hot at her ear. “Fighting and squirming only turns me on. Don’t stop.”

She immediately stilled. God, he wasn’t lying. His dick was undeniably more pronounced against her back. Feeling him like that, so close, so huge and hard, rushed heat between her legs and prickles over her skin. Why, oh why was she responding this way? She hated and wanted it, and mother of all fucks, she couldn’t have been more completely and totally out of her mind.

She drew a ragged breath. Think, think, think. But his intention blatantly rubbed against her, scattering her thoughts. “You’re going to rape me, aren’t you?”

His torso moved up and down with his breath. “I thought you wanted to be fuck buddies. Don’t make it weird.”

Thin Love - Cover

Love isn’t supposed to be an addiction. It isn’t supposed to leave you bleeding.

Kona pushed, Keira pulled, and in their wake, they left behind destruction.

She sacrificed everything for him.

It wasn’t enough.

But the wounds of the past can never be completely forgotten and still the flame remains, slumbers between the pleasure of yesterday and the thought of what might have been.

Now, sixteen years later, Keira returns home to bury the mother who betrayed her, just as Kona tries to hold onto what remains of his NFL career with the New Orleans Steamers. Across the crowded bustle of a busy French Market, their paths collide, conjuring forgotten memories of a consuming touch, skin on skin, and the still smoldering fire that begs to be rekindled.

When Kona realizes the trifecta of betrayal—his, Keira’s and those lies told to keep them apart—his life is irrevocably changed and he once again takes Keira down with him into the fire that threatens to ignite them both.

Thin Love is an extremely beautiful story of finding your true love again, and redemption.  It is a captivating read from beginning to end.

The story starts out in April of 2013, where Ransom and his mother, Kiera, are watching football events on television.  Kiera is tense when the name of Kona Hale is mentioned, and her son questions her behavior.

Thin Love goes back in time to college years for both Kona and Kiera.  Kiera felt that Kona was acting like an entitled womanizer who expected all females to fall at his feet.  I agreed with her.  In the beginning, I really didn’t like him too well.  As the story progresses we see a side of Kona that is vulnerable and at times weak.

The story is told in relating to the point of view of both Kona and Kiera.  We see their feelings on what happened during college and the years following.  I enjoyed seeing how both Kiera and Kona felt from their POV.

I enjoyed Kiera in the story informing Kona that she can never have thin love.  Find out when you read Thin Love what that comments mean.  I believe that Kiera deserved something special in her life, and I really hoped Kona would be it.

Now comes the villains.  Both Kiera and Kona’s mothers were the definition of evil.  They had expectations of their children that was highly inappropriate.  Kiera in addition experienced quite a bit of abuse by her mom.  I wanted both characters to rise upon what their parents forced upon them.  Kiera is more mature than Kona in that sense.  Kona always seemed to welcome trouble by following his mother’s wishes.  These mothers are the villain that you love to hate.

Kona needed to determine at whist cost would he save his family?  I liked how he turned out in the end.  I guess when they say someone needs a lightening bolt to wake up is true in the case of Kona.  For him to ever have a fully HEA he had to overcome numerous obstacles in order to receive the people and meaning in life he is meant for.  What he accomplish that in time?

I am looking forward to Ransom’s story.  The son was probably my favorite character.  He was a secondary character with numerous roles to fulfill.

Check out Thin Love.  You won’t regret it.

worth forgiving cover

They say men like a lady in the living room and a whore in the bedroom. I never knew the sentiment was reciprocal. Until I met Jax Knight. A gentleman in public, a commanding, dirty talking rogue in the bedroom.

Daughter of legendary fighter “The Saint,” Lily St. Claire knows firsthand how fighters can be. As the owner of a chain of MMA gyms, she’s no stranger to aggressive, dominating, and possessive men. That’s why she’s always kept her distance. But the day Jax Knight walks through her door she’s captivated by his charm. Stunningly handsome, well mannered, Ivy League educated, and confident, he shatters all the preconceived notions she’d come to think were true about men who trained to fight.

But falling for someone so soon after her breakup wasn’t something she’d planned on. And definitely not something her ex plans to allow.

Jax Knight is recovering from the destruction his father left after discovering he had a half brother.  He wants nothing to do with his father’s lies, and the plan to be re-elected.  Jax leaves Washington D.C. to go to New York for a meeting to invest in gyms.

Lili St. Cloud is living in a fog.  Her dad died, and she is left running gyms with her dad’s best friend, Joe.  Joe has a nephew who doesn’t understand that Lili no longer wants anything to do with him.  He is borderline stalking her.

Jax meets Lili and sparks fly.  There are some secrets that if not revealed may cause problems down the road.  Lili needs these silent investors that Jax is working for to help run the gyms.  Joe wants to retire, and spend his days on matters less stressful.

When secrets are revealed, and Jax father comes into the picture, will Jax be worth forgiving?

The plot line is catching from beginning to end.  We get to see what happened with the son that was groomed to follow the father.  Jax does get to have some interaction with his brother Vince.  We saw Vince’s POV, now we get to see Jax’s POV.

Jax was probably my favorite new character.  He was protective of Lili, and a good friend.  He just needed to believe that life could change for himself.  That is where Lili comes in.  I believe in a way she taught Jax quite a bit.  Even Joe helps him with his new mission.  Jax is a not-to-extreme alpha-male.  He just seems to notice when he is needed, and when to hang back.  He gives Lili room to grow and be herself.  That is what I loved about Worth Forgiving.

I am looking forward to more works from Vi.  She is an excellent writer whose talent far exceeds the stars that anyone can give her.

Excerpt: Meet Jax and Lily

Dinner and a dirty mouth

My face pinks when the waiter clears his throat, no doubt he’d heard Jax’s last comment.

“Are you ready to hear the specials?”

“Are we?” Jax arches an eyebrow, his eyes gleaming with delight. He’s not the slight bit embarrassed, but knows I am and is quite enjoying himself.

“Yes. Please.” I give him the evil eye and force my full attention back to the waiter. The entire time the waiter talks about the specials I feel Jax’s eyes burning into me.

“I’ll give you a moment to let you decide.” Graciously, the waiter excuses himself.

“Why did you do that?” I scold, my voice low.

“Do what?” He leans back in his seat, crossing his arms over his thick chest.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

“Do I?”

“You enjoy watching me flustered, don’t you?”

Jax arches both eyebrows. Bad choice of words.

“You know what I mean.”

Leaning in, his voice gritty and sexy, he looks me straight in the eyes when he speaks. “I love watching you. Period. But what I like best is watching you pretend you’re unaffected. It’s like an unspoken challenge.” He pauses and leans in even closer. “I love the pink that creeps up your cheeks when I say something dirty. The way your pussy throbs when I mention what I’m going to do to you later, and you wiggle in your seat trying to control it. So yeah, I guess I do like watching you flustered. You sit and give your attention to the waiter, trying to pretend you’re listening to whatever he’s saying instead of thinking of me feeding you my cock later, but we both know you didn’t hear one word he said. Hell I didn’t hear one word watching you, just knowing what you were thinking about.”

This time, I see the waiter before he’s close enough to hear us. He smiles as he reaches our table. “So what can I get for you this evening? Did I interest you in one of our specials?”

I look at the waiter, then Jax, who arches an eyebrow with a knowing smirk on his face, then back to the waiter. “The specials all sounded delicious. I just can’t decide for myself. I’m going to defer to my date to pick one for me.” I return my eyes to Jax with a cheeky grin.

He throws his head back with a chuckle and looks at the poor confused waiter. “We’ll take whatever two are your favorites. Surprise us.”

The Manhattan Puzzle Excerpt

‘Go for it. The rougher the better, girl.’ The man had a black silk blindfold tied around his head. He spoke slowly, his voice thick with desire.

Xena went to the door and unlocked it.

‘What’s that? Getting your toys out? Wow, this is even better than you promised.’

Lord Bidoner walked into the panic room. He closed the door behind him and pressed the button to turn on the air management system. The scrubber in the roof could remove the smoke from a blazing fire and turn the output into a vapour trail.

The man, spread-eagled and handcuffed to the stainless steel bed frame, had an expectant smile on his face.

‘Go on, do it,’ he said.

The navy Calvin Klein silk suit hanging from the stool beside the bed gave an indication of who he was. Lord Bidoner examined the man’s wallet. His bank ID card, a credit-card-sized piece of aluminium with an embedded proximity chip and his family name, Hare, embossed on it, confirmed what they already knew.

The head of global security at BXH, one of the world’s few truly global banks, was lying face-up and naked in front of him.

‘Don’t keep me waiting, girl.’

‘I won’t,’ purred Xena. She stroked his leg, then his inner thigh. He quivered in anticipation.

The man’s wife would surely appreciate photographs of this event, but Lord Bidoner had more pressing concerns.

He nodded at Xena.

She was dressed in a low-cut skin-tight black catsuit that fitted her thin frame perfectly. The man laid out in front of them was expecting something memorable from the woman he’d met in the champagne bar opposite Grand Central, two weeks before. Xena’s story, about being an Ethiopian diplomat’s daughter, and her eager smile, had captivated him.

She ran her finger down the man’s stomach. It trembled under her touch.

‘Don’t stop, honey. Don’t stop.’

With her other hand Xena clicked on the silver Turboflame blowtorch, the most expensive model in the world with its 1500C flame. She held the gently hissing blue, inch-long flame up and watched it glow brighter as her fingers moved slowly down his stomach.

‘What’s that?’ he said.

She didn’t reply.

Hare’s voice was still confident when he spoke. ‘Was that your sister who just came in? Is she gonna join us?’

‘We have a surprise for you,’ said Xena.

The man pulled on the handcuffs, which began to cut into his skin. It had taken a bit of persuasion, since this was their third meeting, for Xena to get him to go this far, but he trusted her now. And he’d made it clear that he wasn’t going to put up with any crap. He’d break the bed if she didn’t release him when he gave the password.

She’d smiled, hugged him and agreed.

They’d even laughed about making a written contract.

‘What’s the surprise?’ He shook the bed, testing its resilience and the strength of the handcuffs. He’d assumed they were easily breakable toys, like a previous pair she’d shown him. But he was wrong.

And he didn’t know that the bed was bolted to the reinforced slab of the panic room floor, either. Though he might have guessed that there was something wrong when it refused to move under him.

‘Just a friend of mine. We have a little question for you,’ said Xena.

‘Yeah?’ He was still curious, still expectant of further delights.

‘What is the password for the security system at BXH?’

The man didn’t reply verbally. He shook the bed from side to side, trying to break free. He didn’t know that his only hope was if his thrashing managed to separate his hands from his wrists, and his feet from his ankles. And very few people have strength enough to do that.

Xena waved the blue flame, raised it, as if offering it up. It flickered higher.

The odour of the burning butane gas filled the room like bad perfume. The sound of the blow torch was a threatening hissing now. Xena placed the tip of the flame against the top edge of the whiskey tumbler the man had been drinking from. The glass turned blue.

‘Wait until you feel this. Then you will tell me,’ said Xena. Her tone had changed. It was demanding now.

‘What? Fu . . .’ The end of that confident word was bitten off by the piercing scream that came from deep within his throat. Xena had touched the flame against the pale skin of his shoulder.

He began thrashing. Like a fish flailing. He moved from side to side, squirming away from the skin-blistering heat. But he couldn’t move fast enough. And his legs and arms were stretched out tight.

Easy targets.

The smell in the room changed and the atmosphere with it. Pain and whimpering, sizzling and guttural roars filled the air.

The man had become a dog.

Then Xena asked him again.

‘The password, please.’ She spoke softly, as if they were still playing a game.

‘If you give it up, I will release you. You can explain these little burns to your wife. But the ones I will inflict next will require hospital treatment. Or the services of a morgue.’ She clicked the flame off, then pressed the hot tip hard and fast into the biggest blister she had inflicted, near his ankle.

‘What do you say, Mr Hare?’

The man answered with a defiant, animal roar. He shook the bed under him. The last vestige of his pride in working at BXH bellowed out of him.

Xena lit the flame again. She reached forward, touched it to his chest, and ran it fast down the middle until smoke from his burning body hair filled the room with a sickly odour.

‘Stop, stop!’ he screamed. His body squirmed to escape the heat.

‘It’s #89*99,’ he shouted. ‘Please! Stop!’

Bidoner keyed the password into his phone and pressed send.

‘I hope you’re not lying,’ said Xena. ‘I want all this to have a happy ending.’

She squeezed his thigh with her hand, then stroked it.

Tears streamed from under his blindfold. His cheeks were red. It was good he couldn’t see the weals on his body, because he would know immediately that he wouldn’t be able to explain any of them to his wife.

‘Please, let me go. I promise not to tell anyone. I swear, on my children’s lives.’

Lord Bidoner’s mobile beeped as an incoming message came in. He nodded at Xena. The code had worked.

‘I believe you,’ she said. ‘But there is one more thing I must do for you.’

She put the Turboflame down and went to the fridge. She took out a six-inch-long serrated knife, honed with care to a perfect blade, from the freezer section.

She held it in the air, admiring its cold edge.

‘Now you will find release,’ she said.

The man’s body went still. His toes, which had scrunched up, half straightened. The only sound was his pain-filled whimpering.

The panic room in the apartment on Fifth Avenue, overlooking the skyscrapers of Manhattan, was soundproof. It was why they used the room.

Xena flicked the blade across the man’s pale skin, once, then twice, fascinated by how quickly blood gushed, how fast it flowed from a few simple cuts.

‘This is for my brothers,’ she said.

‘Don’t,’ he whimpered. Fear trembled in his voice. ‘I have two children, a wife.’

She growled, psyching herself up.

‘Prima quattuor invocare unum,’ she said, as she grabbed him, jerking him upwards and castrating him with one swinging motion.

She held the bloody remains up in the air.

His screams of terror and pain vibrated through the room as blood spurted two feet high. A foul smell followed and the man’s words became a babbling.

Lord Bidoner held his nose. He’d seen enough. He went out to the main room of the apartment, with its view towards the glittering Jazz-era spire of the Empire State Building.

‘You did good, my dear. The first offering has been done correctly,’ he said, when Xena joined him.

She was panting.

‘Come here.’

He pushed her up against the inch-thick glass of the window, as Manhattan glittered behind them.

Afterwards, he handed her a balloon glass containing a large shot of Asbach 21. She sipped the brandy, then downed it in one gulp.

Then she lay down on the sleek oak coffee table that dominated the room. The canyon of lights stretching into the velvet Manhattan night reflected all the way along the length of the table and onto her ebony skin.

He reached down and stroked her shoulder. It was trembling.

‘Three more before the moon rises again. That is what the book says. That is what we will do.’

She smiled up at him. Her white teeth shone as she leaned her head back and stretched.

A familiar song was playing, but I couldn’t remember the name. That bugged me enough to open my eyes. A wall of black met my gaze, slick and smooth like glass. I reached up to see what it was, and that’s when I realized my hands were tied.

“Silent Lucidity” by Queensryche, my mind supplied, followed immediately by, I’m in the backseat of a car. One that was well taken care of, going by that flawless, shiny roof. With those details filled in, I also remembered what had happened right before I’d passed out. And who I was with.

“Why are my hands tied?” I said, heaving myself into an upright position.

For some reason Adrian didn’t have a rear view mirror, which was why he had to glance over his shoulder to look at me.

“Does anything make you panic?” he asked, sounding amused. “You’re tied up in the backseat of a cop-killer’s car, but I’ve seen people get more upset when Starbucks runs out of pumpkin spice flavor.”

Anyone normal would panic, not that it would do any good. Besides, I ran out of “normal” a long time ago, when I realized I saw things no one else did.

Speaking of which, why wasn’t I in pain? The lump where Mrs. Paulson had whacked me was gone, and my shirt was red from blood, but aside from a mild kink in my neck, I felt fine. When I pushed my shirt up, somehow, I wasn’t surprised to see smooth, unbroken skin on my abdomen. Well, that and a bunch of crumbs, like I’d eaten a dessert too messily.

“Why does it look like I have angel food cake on my stomach?” I wondered aloud.

Adrian snorted. “Close. It’s medicine. You were injured.”

“You can tell me how I’m not anymore,” I said, holding out my bound hands, “after you untie me.”

Another backwards glance, this one challenging.

“You may be the calmest person I’ve ever been sent to retrieve, but if I tell you now what you want to know, that will change. So pick—the  truth, or being untied?”

“Truth,” I said instantly.

He let out a laugh. “Another first. You’re full of surprises.”

So was he. He’d just admitted that he regularly kidnapped people—which was how I translated “retrieve”—so I should be trying my damnedest to get free. But more than anything, I needed answers. Besides, I still wasn’t afraid of him, and somehow, that had nothing to do with him magically healing me.

“Truth, Adrian,” I repeated.

He turned once again and his gaze locked with mine, those odd blue eyes startling me with their intensity. For a moment, I could only stare, all thought frozen in my mind. I don’t know why I reached out, awkwardly touching his arm to feel the hard muscles beneath that bulky jacket. If I’d thought about it, I wouldn’t have done it. Yet I couldn’t make myself pull away.

Then I gasped when his hand covered mine. At some point, he’d taken off his gloves, and the feel of his warm, bare skin sent a shock wave through me. The touch seemed to affect Adrian, too. His lips parted and he edged over the back of the seats—

He yanked on the steering wheel, narrowly avoiding another car. A horn blared, and when the driver passed us, an extended middle finger shook angrily in our direction. I leaned back, my heart pounding from the near collision. At least, that’s what I told myself it was from.

Dyate,” Adrian muttered.

I didn’t recognize the word, and I was at a loss to place his accent. It had a musical cadence like Italian, but beneath that was a harsher, darker edge.

“What’s that language?” I asked, trying to mask the sudden shakiness in my voice.

This time, he didn’t take his eyes off the road. “Nothing you’ve heard of.”

“I picked truth, remember?” I said, holding up my bound hands for emphasis.

That earned me a quick glance. “That is the truth, but you don’t get more until you meet Zach. Then we can skip all the ‘this isn’t possible’ arguments.”

I let out a short laugh. “After what I saw on Detective Kroger’s face, my definition of ‘impossible’ has changed.”

Adrian swerved again, but this time, no other car was near.

“What did you see?”

I tensed. How did I explain without sounding insane? No way to, so I chose to go on the attack instead.

“Why were you in my hotel room? And how did you heal me? There isn’t even a mark—”

“What did you see on his face, Ivy?”

Despite his hard tone, when my name crossed his lips, something thrummed inside me, like he’d yanked on a tie I hadn’t known was there. Feeling it was as disturbing as my inexplicable reaction to his clasping my hands.

“Shadows,” I said quickly, to distract from that. “He had snakelike shadows all over his face.”

I expected Adrian to tell me I’d imagined it, a response I was used to hearing. Instead, he pulled over, putting the car in park but keeping the engine running. Then he turned to stare at me.

“Was that the only strange thing you saw?”

I swallowed. I knew better than to talk about these things. Still, I’d demanded the truth from Adrian. It didn’t seem fair to lie in return.

“I saw two versions of the same B and B earlier. One was pretty, but the other was old and rotted, and my sister was trapped inside it.”

Adrian said nothing, though he continued to pin me with that hard stare. When he finally spoke, his question was so bizarre I thought I’d misheard him.

“What do I look like to you?”

“My appearance.” He drew out the words like I was slow. “Describe me.”

All of a sudden, he wanted compliments? I might have finally met someone crazier than me.

“This is ridiculous,” I muttered, but started with the obvious. “Six-six, early twenties, built like Thor, golden brown hair with blond highlights, silvery blue eyes…you want me to go on?”

He began to laugh, a deep, rich baritone that would’ve been sensual except for how angry it made me.

“Now I know why they came after you,” he said, still chuckling. “They must’ve realized you were different, but if they’d known what you could see, you never would’ve made it out of that B and B.”

“You can stop laughing,” I said sharply. “I get that it’s crazy to see the things I do.”

Lots of kids had imaginary friends growing up. I had imaginary places, though at first, I didn’t know I was the only one who could see them. Once my parents had realized that what I kept describing went far beyond childhood fancifulness, the endless doctor visits and tests began. One by one, diseases and psychoses had been crossed off until I was diagnosed with a non-monoamine-cholinergic imbalance in my temporal cortex.

In other words, I saw shit that wasn’t there for reasons no one could figure out. The pills I took helped a little, though I lied and said they got rid of all my hallucinations. I was sick of doctors poking at me. So whenever I saw something that no one else did, I forced myself to ignore it—until Mrs. Paulson and Detective Kroger had tried to kill me, of course.

Adrian did stop laughing, and that unblinking intensity was back in his gaze.

“Well, Ivy, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is, you’re not crazy. The bad news is, everything you’ve seen is real, and now, it’ll be coming for you.”
