Review: Lawyers in Love Series by N.M. Silber

The Law of Attraction

Once upon a time two lawyers fell in love across a courtroom …

Gabrielle Ginsberg was a public defender with plenty of nerve and Braden Pierce was an assistant district attorney with a whole lot of swagger. Gabrielle wanted Braden and Braden wanted Gabrielle.

And Cameron wanted Gabrielle.

And Marla wanted Braden.

And Cole wanted Gabrielle.

And Mrs. Mason wanted Braden.

And an anonymous letter writer wanted to keep Gabrielle and Braden apart.

Together Gabrielle and Braden discovered many important things, like which doors at the courthouse actually locked, and that desks could be useful for more than writing. They also found out that the path of love was not always smooth, and it was sometimes tread upon by some really wacky people, like a confused fanny grabber, an eighty-two year old pothead and a gentleman who threw a wine and cheese party in his pants. Could true love overcome a lack of privacy, interference by jealous rivals and the insanity of the criminal court system?

If you want a series that will leave you in sticks than Lawyers in Love is the series for you.  You may recall that I have written in the past about N.M. Silber’s novels, but I couldn’t miss the chance to promote her work again.  I could write my college thesis about her novels.  Everything a reader could want in a story in included in Lawyers in Love series.  I have now read the series at least five times.  In fact I could see Lawyers in Love become a movie or sitcom.

The first book in the series is The Law of Attraction.  In this story we meet the majority of the characters and get a chance to start on Gabrielle’s story.  The Law of Attraction is told in Gabrielle’s point of view.  Gabrielle is probably the most funny characters so seeing her thoughts just add a more rich content to the story.  It takes the story to a 10 on the richter scale.

Gabrielle and Braden are on opposing sides of the law.  Gabrielle is a public defender and Braden is a prosecutor.  They work in Judge Channing’s court room.  Judge Channing made me laugh so hard during the story.  He is kind of a dry guy that for some reason still gets shocked by the cases entering his courtroom.

Braden is a serial date and Gabrielle really doesn’t want to stand in line by his bedroom.  She seeks more substance.  She isn’t really a girl as N.M. Silber describes as someone who wants more than sex with a meal plan.  Being the great attorney she is, she negotiates a deal with Braden on dating each other before doing the dirty deed.  I loved the negotiation scene so much.  It was really funny watching Gabrielle torment Braden.  He actually deserved it.

The story shows scenes within the courtroom.  These are actual preliminary hearing before the case goes to trial or gets a plea bargain.  My favorite case was the geriatric booty call.  Or how about the 80 year old with a pound of weed on her possession.

There is a major conflict of the story.  That is Gabrielle is receiving threatening notes telling her to break things off with Braden.  Gabrielle starts her own investigation using her friends and she ends up in so much hot water with Braden.  What is funny is how innocently she acts about it.  That is why Gabrielle is my favorite character.  She honestly believes in her outrageous behavior.  Well, that is until Braden calls her out on it.

The next story starts out with The Home Court Advantage.  The synopsis and review for that is below.

Take a chance and start with The Law of Attraction.  You will be a huge fan as N.M. Silber’s as I am.

The Home Court Advantage

Once upon a time, two lawyers fell in love …

Gabrielle and Braden have fallen in love and face a bright future together if they can just survive all of the crazy people they encounter, like anonymous napkin droppers, UFO enthusiasts, crooked businessmen, nude drunk drivers, and a woman who tries to break into jail. When the gavel falls will the verdict be happily ever after?

Come join the fun as the sexiest couple in the Philadelphia Criminal Court System shares more witty banter and red hot lovin’ with a dash of mystery thrown in. The story that began with The Law of Attraction concludes with lots of love and laughter in The Home Court Advantage.

The Home Court Advantage is the continuation of Gabrielle and Braden’s story.  We still get the see the gang, and enjoy moment of snarky humor.  The story is told again by the point of view of Gabrielle.  I felt that benefited the story quite a bit.

The Home Court Advantage provides us loads of fun times while in the courtroom.  In this book my favorite case was Commonwealth Vs. Luchinsky.  Here was a 6’2″ woman who scaled a prison wall for her hot-blooded womanly needs.  This is the first time I have ever heard of someone trying to break-in a prison.  Yes folks, she was trying to enter the prison walls illegally.  Let us just say the judge gave her some fun romp time with her man from now on.

Gabrielle is still being stalked by an unknown person.  She has her wild idea on how to catch them.   One prime example was taking the gang on a conspiracy campout with other people seeking sight of UFO.  Will the gang see a UFO while on their adventure?

The Home Court Advantage provides us the finale for Gabrielle and Braden’s story.  But no worries we will still hear more about them as we read the other clan’s story.

Next story up is Lily Adler.

Legal Brief’s is a story full of witty humor.  It will have you laughing from beginning to end.  Legal Brief’s is probably my favorite book out of the whole series.  I think I enjoyed the sexy librarian in the daytime and delicious erotic romance writer by night.  This story is for Lily and Adam.  We met Adam in the first two books, and we were introduced to Lily in The Home Court Advantage.

Lily and Adam are lovable characters.  They were so easy to fall for as a couple.  Lily and Adam were huge rivals growing up.  They pulled pranks and  called names.  It took 23 years for them to come to terms with their feelings.  And when they did was it explosive!!!

The conflict of the story is that Lily was given pertinent information by a stranger.  Information that will put her in danger.  Now a former flame is in the picture, Adam is not happy, and Lily is just trying to stay alive.  Can Adam and Lily move past everything and receive the fairy tale ending they desire?

We still get the see the gang, and boy have their friendship really developed.  They are so loyal to each other, and have each other backs.

The next story is the finale for Lily and Adam.  Wait to see what is in story for this crazy couple.

Legally Wed

Once upon a time childhood enemies grew up and fell in love … and got engaged? Uh oh, this should be interesting …

Adam Roth and Lily Adler have survived nutty neighbors, cow pajamas, mobsters and “the diaper incident.” They have learned to live, love, and work together in harmony. Most of the time. Now with the promise of marital bliss on the horizon, they will need to tackle even bigger challenges, like Lily’s anxiety-fueled libido, Adam’s increasing exhaustion, two Jewish mothers and an eccentric wedding planner named Mr. Jonathan. Will everyone make it to the wedding alive? Find out in Legally Wed.

Now Adam and Lily are engaged.  The meddling Jewish mothers are helping in preparing for the wedding.  And Adam and Lily are learning to be a couple.  That is the story of Legally Wed.

Legally Wed is more than a romantic comedy.  It is a story to two vulnerable people establishing themselves in a forever sort of relationship.  N.M. Silber provides us a story of Adam and Lily learning to trust each other and let go of the past.  That is what is just perfect with Legally Wed.  The humor that we saw in previous stories just is added with a richness of having a message added to it.

I am going to say that I love how Adam and Lily still bring up the tic-tac issue.  Adam only will give out one tic-tac, and Lily wants him to share more.  She really wants to know his issue with just releasing one tic-tac at a time.  They fight over whether tic-tac is a candy or a breath mint.

I will tell you that this series has been a epic journey getting to meet The Lawyers in Love.  I am looking forward to seeing more future stories.

Title: Spirited Away (Psychic Detective Series, #3)

Author: Angela Campbell

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release Date: September 18, 2014

Spirited cover

Who knew pet-sitting could be so dangerous…or so sexy?!

Socially awkward Emma “Spider” Fisher prefers her laptop to people, so she’s more than happy to oblige her boss when he asks her to pet- and housesit while he honeymoons in London.

But it doesn’t take long for accident-prone Spider to lose a dog, get locked out of the house, and set off the house alarm!

Thankfully, her hot new neighbor is more than happy to come to her rescue. But Noah West is a mystery to Spider—and one she intends to solve.

The Psychic Detectives have been a great series.  If you haven’t read the series I will give you a very quick background of the novels included in the series.

In the novel On the Scent we are introduced to Zach Collins and Hannah Dawson.  Zach is a security specialist, and Hannah has hired his firm to help protect and find out who is after her and her cat and dog.  Hannah was the nurse for Ellie, and when Ellie passed away Hannah received the animals to caretake as well as a ten-million dollar trust to care for these pets.  Someone is trying to animal nap these pets, and Zach refuses to allow anyone to hurt them or Hannah.  But Zach has a few secrets he is keeping from Hannah.  In On the Scent we are introduced to Abbott (the cat) and Costello (the dog).  These animals become very pertinent in the series.

The second novel in the story is Something Wicked.  This is Alexandra King’s story.  We meet Alexandra in the first story.  She is a psychic medium.  While she is in Charleston she meets a police officer and ends up being brought into a case with a serial killer on the lose.  Will she end up being the next target?  Alexandra is keeping certain information hidden from this detective.  When he finds out her real reason for being in town will he ever believe in her?

The third novel is what the majority of my review will be on.  The title of this novel is Spirited Away.  This is Spider’s (Emma) story.  We met Spider in Something Wicked.  She is the employee of Zach that is a computer genius.  If there is a will, Spider will find a way.  Spider is housesitting for Zach and Hannah.  Zach and Hannah are on their honeymoon.  Hannah meets the new sexy neighbor, Noah West.  Noah seems to be having a problem with his house being haunted, and Emma is determined to figure out the connections.  Noah is also hiding his interest in Emma and her boss.

I can tell you that this is one fantastic series to read.  The genre of the series is suspense and romance with paranormal activity surrounding the theme.  There is so much humor to the series, that I can say that time flew fast as I read each novel.  My favorite part of the series was the animals – Abbott and Costello.  Later on Charlie (another dog) came into play as another pet for Zach and Hannah.  Abbott was the goto animal.  When a psychic needed certain answers they usually could find a few resources in this furry cat.  Costello was just plain humorous.  I loved being able to see throughout the series how these animals thought.

I did catch a bit of meaning in Spirited Away.  The author portrayed a message that we choose our own fate in life.  Just by having a parent who isn’t fit doesn’t determine how our life will pan out.  This was an important lesson for Noah to learn.  He also needed to learn to allow love into his life.  I loved that we could see that in the story.

I enjoyed how well each character was portrayed in the novel.  My favorite character (hard choice) was probably Emma.  She was hilarious, kind, forgiving, and a go getter.  She never allowed fear to slow her down.  She also had a lot to prove to people, especially her father.  I also enjoyed how much Noah and Emma just clicked together.  You could feel the chemistry through the words the author used.  I could imagine any different definition of character roles for either Emma and Noah.

I am looking forward to more in this series.  The suspense will leave you breathless as you take a journey with each couple the novel represents.  I just also know we will be seeing more from Abbott, Costello, and Charlie.  Let’s see what other mystery they can resolve.

Oh yeah. She was gonna kill that mutt when she got her hands on him. And the cat too, just because.

Emma “Spider” Fisher rattled the locked doorknob one more time and glared at the animals watching her from the other side of the front window. Costello, the dog, panted happily and gave her a tongue-lolling, open-mouthed grin. Abbott, the cat, stood in the bay window beside him, watching her with disinterested, narrowed eyes as if she were the stupidest human he’d ever met.

Which was a distinct possibility.

“Ugh!” She rattled the front doorknob again and slapped the doorframe. Yeah, as if that would make it open.

It was the morning after her first night of house-sitting for Zach and Hannah, and she’d already locked herself out. Correction. One of the dogs had escaped the fence, she’d given chase in her jammies, and when she’d ran back to call for help after not being able to catch Charlie, Costello had bumped shut the door she’d left open.

Locking her out. Without a key. Without a phone.

Without a hope of not being killed by her boss when he returned from his honeymoon.

His beloved blind dog had disappeared after she’d chased him into some trees on the other side of the street. No telling where Charlie was now. God forbid, he could be lying dead on the highway. Might have fallen down a well somewhere. Joined a gang. Who knew?

In fact, who knew a blind dog could run so darn fast to begin with? She’d bet that dog had some cheetah in his genes.

Heaving a half laugh, half sob, she turned and slid down the door until her bottom met the cold concrete of the front doorstep. A quick scan of the other houses and manicured lawns lining the quiet subdivision was no comfort. Well, maybe it was. No one seemed to peek out of curtains or be aware of her humiliating predicament, although she’d have to start pounding on doors soon to see if someone would let her use their phone.

Who would she call? One of the so-hot-they-could-melt-her-panties-off guys she worked with? She groaned.

This could not be happening to her.

A flash of brown movement to her left caught Spider’s attention and sent her heart thumping wildly against her ribcage again.

Charlie was sniffing the grass and following an invisible trail beside the sidewalk in front of the house. Near the freaking road! Uttering a squeak, Spider sprang to her bare feet and hurried down the driveway, muttering “owww” and “ouch” every time she stepped on a rock or something sharp in the grass.

She had a hard and fast policy against swearing, but she was seriously reconsidering that rule this morning.

“Charlie!” Her voice carried down the street. She clicked her tongue. “Com’ere boy!”

The dog lifted his head but kept prancing forward as a car came around the curve toward him. Panic seized her chest, releasing its grip only when the vehicle slowed and turned down a side street. The too-smart-for-his-own-good canine perked his ears up and looked in that direction. Ohmygosh, he was blind and following sounds. She had to catch him. She had to. If he got out of the subdivision and found a main road—

She whistled and jumped up and down, hoping the noise would divert his attention. “Charlie!”

He turned and took three slow steps toward her.

“Good boy!” She whistled again and patted the front of her thighs.

The long-legged retriever mix lowered his head, wiggled his raised butt, barked, and darted in the opposite direction.

“No, no, no!” Spider gave chase. “Charlie!”

He thought they were playing a game. Oh, for the love of—!

At least he was running in circles, not straying outside the neighborhood. She had no idea how long they ran up and down the suburban street lined with a mixture of classic Georgian, English cottage and modern houses. It was mid-morning, and no one had come outside to see what she was causing a ruckus about. Geez. She didn’t know if that was a good thing or a bad thing. What kind of neighbors were these?

“Char…Char…Charlie!” Winded, she had to slow down until she was barely moving at all. Hands on her thighs, leaning over, she watched helpless as Charlie plowed headfirst into a neighbor’s bushes. Startled, he hunched low and took slow, careful steps around the hedge. His tongue dangled out of his mouth but, otherwise, he looked ready to resume his marathon sprint. What the heck did Hannah feed that dog? Crack cocaine?

One step. Two steps. Spider inched closer. Charlie turned, and she used all of her reserves to leap toward him.

Yes! Their bodies collided, and she rolled with him onto the grass, the forty-pound dog using her as his personal cushion, not that she cared. Not as long as she had a tight grip on him.

She laughed in triumph and then groaned when a wet tongue found her mouth. Ewww. Disgusting. Doggy slobber. So gross.

It took a few more minutes of her wrangling him on the neighbor’s lawn to get into a position where she actually could pick him up. New rule. The dogs were going to wear their leashes twenty-four seven while they were under her watch.

She’d once thought she might like to have a dog, but uh uh. Not anymore. Cats were so much easier than dogs.

The two of them lumbered back to the house and collapsed together inside the fenced yard. Oh, thank heaven. Now she just had to figure out how to get back inside the locked home she was supposed to be protecting.

Chest heaving, she sprawled on the grass for a few minutes, thinking about it.

Man, she had to pee.

Pushing herself up on her elbows, she considered each of the windows. She’d already checked most of them. Her gaze fell on one. The bathroom. Had she locked it back after cracking it open last night when someone whose name rhymed with Costello had pooped mushy stuff all over the floor?

Remind her to never give him part of her burrito again. Ever.

Struggling to her feet, she glared at Charlie as she made her way to that side of the house. He was happily prancing about the yard again as if the past hour had never happened. Insane dog.

Spider nearly burst into tears when she saw through the pane that the window wasn’t latched. Yes! She pushed it up as far as she could, lifted herself up, and…

A pulsating siren startled her so much she squealed and fell backwards, landing flat on her butt in the grass.

“Oh, no, no, no.” The house’s high-tech smart alarm system was programmed to automatically arm itself after fifteen minutes if the doors and windows remained inactive. Zach had warned her about it at least a dozen times. It was a new system he was testing for clients of his private security firm.

It took Spider a few tries to pull herself up so her waist was aligned with the windowsill. A pair of almond-shaped eyes were there waiting for her when she did. Perched on the sink, Abbott’s black and white feline body was drawn back and ready to spring as he stared at the opening in the window.

“No!” Spider yelled at him as she grappled to lift her left leg up. “Don’t even think about it, mister.”

With a growl, the cat took a leap in the opposite direction and darted through the bathroom doorway as she managed to get her leg over the windowsill. She was half in and half out. Basically. Almost. Her foot was inside the bathroom anyway. That was progress.

“Hello?” a man’s deep voice called from not too far away. “Everything okay back there?”

Oh, for the love of Pete.

Straddling the window, Spider wiggled, trying to swing her other leg over and into the bathroom. Much harder to do than she’d expected. Her left side was pressed to the pane of glass on the outside of the house. No matter how hard she pushed, she couldn’t get the window to raise high enough to let her maneuver inside.

The house phone began ringing and seconds later, the alarm stopped. Well, that was something at least.

Furry legs grabbed onto Spider’s calf inside the house.

“Hello?” the man called again.

“Uh, yeah! We’re okay.” Still trying to shove the window up, she glanced down and saw Costello humping away at her leg.

You’ve got to be kidding me.

She tried to jostle the dog off, which only managed to get her stuck in a more awkward position. Uh. She was wedged in there pretty good now.

The back fence moved inward. Spider reached a hand out and screamed, “Don’t let the dog out!”

A man she didn’t recognize grabbed Charlie’s collar just as the dog ran toward the gate. That mutt must have some superpower for detecting openings he couldn’t see. She’d swear her life on it. Her body sagged against the window frame on a loud sigh of relief that he hadn’t escaped again.

The stranger snapped the gate shut behind him and gave Charlie a generous rub on both ears. Spider snorted when Charlie lapped the man’s face with his tongue. Some guard dog he was.

“Are you sure you don’t need help?”

Seriously? He wanted to help her now?

The guy lifted his delicious green gaze, which widened when it found her. He swore. “Are you stuck in the window?”

She stifled a groan. He would have to be a total hottie, wouldn’t he?

Please, someone shoot me now.

In the midst of dragging trees, I saw Sarenah sitting on the back porch, her dress hiked up around her thighs from the heat as she was thumbing through a book. She wasn’t even acknowledging the fact that I was there, nor did she care that I could see her bare legs. She was being totally inappropriate and rude at the same time … and I liked it. I felt intrigued to my very core, so much that I had to go over and say something to her.

“Hey,” I mumbled.

Without looking up, she reiterated, “Hey.”

My frustration grew as I clenched my fingers into my palms. “Is that book so interesting that you can’t even talk to me?”

That had gotten her attention. She slammed the book shut and stood up, the dress falling back down around her ankles.

“Are you so interesting that I can’t even read my book?” Her dark eyes were wild and she was glaring at me as if she wanted me to spontaneously combust. “Don’t you have a job to do? Look at this mess.” Her eyes moved to the yard. “All of these branches everywhere. My uncle will have your hide.”

She was so angry. I couldn’t help myself. I wiped the sweat from my brow with the back of my hand and busted out laughing.

Sarenah’s hands moved to her hips. I thought she was about to hit me.

I threw up hands up in defense. “I’m …” The laughter got the best of me again. “I’m sorry, Sarenah.” I flashed her an apologetic grin. “It’s just, I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard you talk so much and you’re spatting off at me like some crazy person.”

Her gaze had softened then. She bit her bottom lip so she wouldn’t crack a smile herself. “A crazy person, huh?”

I nodded, stopping to really get a good look at Sarenah’s face, her stunning features and the way her dark eyes popped out in a terrific way. This was Rebecca’s sister? I had been missing out. Sarenah’s strange ways evaporated into enticement before me.

I spent the rest of the evening listening to Sarenah talk as I took all of it in. The tree branches were still scattered all over the yard, but I doubted her uncle would be back anytime soon to discover the mess. Everyone knew he lived at the saloon. She talked mostly about her parents. She had a deep ache from the loss inside of her. She was in a great deal of pain that I felt my own heart hurting along with hers, for her. I found myself wrapping my arm around her and her actually letting me get away with it, but I wasn’t in it to try to make a move. I found myself wanting to comfort Sarenah, tell her everything was going to be okay. I wanted her to trust me and continue to confide in me. She leaned her head against my shoulder, being content to be there with me. It felt incredible as if I had been able to tame her so easily. She was feisty but now so serene. I could’ve lived in that moment forever and been completely content to just be lucky enough to be near her, to smell the flower fragrance in her hair as it fell down across my arm. I rubbed her shoulder with my fingertips. She started humming, the sound making the chaos within me only increase. It was in that moment that I had leaned over and my lips found hers. It had been brief but magnificent, and I was wondering if my mind was ever going to be the same.

Understanding Adolescence: Review – Age of Opportunity by Laurence Steinberg Blog Tour

Age of OpportunityAbout Age of Opportunity

• Hardcover: 272 pages
• Publisher: Eamon Dolan/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (September 9, 2014)

Adolescence now lasts longer than ever before. And as world-renowned expert on adolescent psychology Dr. Laurence Steinberg argues, this makes these years the key period in determining individuals’ life outcomes, demanding that we change the way we parent, educate, and understand young people.

In Age of Opportunity, Steinberg leads readers through a host of new findings — including groundbreaking original research — that reveal what the new timetable of adolescence means for parenting 13-year-olds (who may look more mature than they really are) versus 20-somethings (who may not be floundering even when it looks like they are). He also explains how the plasticity of the adolescent brain, rivaling that of years 0 through 3, suggests new strategies for instilling self-control during the teenage years. Packed with useful knowledge, Age of Opportunity is a sweeping book in the tradition of Reviving Ophelia, and an essential guide for parents and educators of teenagers.

Praise for Age of Opportunity

“As a mother of two boys and an educator, I am so grateful Laurence Steinberg has written this amazing book. He not only clearly and elegantly communicates the newest insights into understanding teenagers’ brains but also shows how adults can manage ourselves when we get frustrated with teens’ behavior.” — Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes and Masterminds and Wingmen

“Steinberg explains how ‘abnormal’ adolescent behavior is actually ‘normal.’ This book belongs on the shelf of every parent, teacher, youth worker, counselor, judge — heck, anyone interested in pre-teens and teenagers.” — David Walsh, Ph.D., author of Why Do They Act That Way?

“If you need to understand adolescents — whether your own or anyone else’s — you must read this book. Steinberg explains why most of our presumptions about adolescence are dead wrong and reveals the truth about this exciting and unnerving stage of life. Written with warmth, lucidity, and passion, Age of Opportunity will fill parents with relief by demystifying their children. Educators and policy-makers should study it carefully.” — Jennifer Senior, author of All Joy and No Fun

Age of Opportunity is a go to manual for those who are parents or educators of teenagers.  It is helpful for absolutely anyone learning to deal with todays adolescence.  You are truly missing out by not getting a copy of this book in your hands.  Laurence writes a book that will take us into the mind of teens and with understanding and gaining a better hand of helping our teens turn into successful adults.

This is a new genre for my blog, but with what happened in my community last week I felt that it was important to get the word out about Age of Opportunity.  Last Friday was a day of mourning for my community.  We had a teenager at a local high school bring a gun to school and start shooting other kids in a crowded cafeteria.  Being a teenager today is different than when I was in school.  I never remember having the worries that kids have in today’s society, so I was very intrigued when I saw the synopsis for Age of Opportunity.  With what is happening in our children’s lives, I wanted to gain a better knowledge in providing a safe and happy environment for my teenage son.  That is why I started reading Age of Opportunity.

When I received the book in the mail, my attention was first caught by the cover.  On the cover is an image of a teenage boy looking out the window at the blue clear sky.  I felt that image represented all the possibilities that face teenagers and the magnitude of their choices.

After reading the cover, front and back, I did an immediate scan of the inside of the book.  The book is broken into ten chapters.  It also contains an index for those seeking a specific subject to read about.  If I am looking at a subject to read about kids and college I just look up the subject name college.  As I look at the pages referred under college I notice that I can read everything from drop out rates to preparing our teens to handle college psychologically.  The chapters in the book cover subjects from How Teenagers Think to How Parents Can Make A Difference.  I absolutely loved the layout and structure of the book.  If there was an area I wanted to focus on I could go to that chapter or page.

My two favorite chapters were How Teenagers Think and How Parents Can Make A Difference.  I also loved the chapter titled, Protecting Adolescents from themselves.  Each contained pertinent information in helping me be a better parent to my son.

One of the most important aspects that I learned was the I could not love my child too much.  It is okay to be affectionate and let your child know every day that you love them and want them to be happy.  It is also important to be warm emotionally, yet firm.  Those two provide much stability in the teen’s life.

Laurence also talks about what is failing in our educational system.  He provides comparisons between the United States and other European and Asian countries.  He informs readers that the United States financially spends less on each child than other kids in different countries.  He even includes the same data for private schools.

After reading The Age of Opportunity I know have gained better knowledge in how to relate with my child and provide a great experience for my son to be successful.  I wish that all schools could provide the opportunity for parents to read this book, as well as teachers and principals.  My mom is a school teacher and I know I am getting her a copy of this book for her to read.

All in all this was a great informational book.  A standing ovation for Laurence Steinberg.

Kassia Preston, a best selling author whose a bit of recluse, but who could blame her after what had happened to her all those years ago. Thankfully, her brother Darios and her friends Genna and Tara had always been there for her. One day in Darios’ gym, she meets Jason. He’s young, fit and mouthwateringly sexy. Kassia is drawn to him, not only because of his looks but because of something else, something indescribable.

Jason Theroux, a young SWAT officer has his own demons that he keeps hidden deep inside.

What happens when these two broken souls get together? Will they be able to survive their past and forge a new future? Or will their demons begin to threaten their relationship, destroying it completely?

My Guardian Angel is a story that will bring you to your knees in how descriptive the words are in allowing the reader to feel what is happening in the scene.  Prime example is the beginning.  I love how Evangelene places the initial scene where you feel like you are there.  The rain is coming down hard, and high schooler Kassia Preston hears loud banging coming from a neighbors house.  You can sense the anticipation of the scene, as she walks through the neighbors house to see what is happening.  The detailed words bring an image that is brought into your mind.  Than the next thing you know, you realize it was a nightmare.  Or was it reality?

Kassia Preston is an author and she spends her leisurely time with her brother, Darios, at the gym or with her friends celebrating at the club.  Darios is always protective of her.  The big brother that he is always protecting the little sister.  I thought a few times he went overboard. than as the story progressed I could understand why.

One day Kassia is at the gym when she meets SWAT officer, Jason.  He is captivating to her ever romantic heart.  But she has problems with their age.  Jason is several years younger than her – almost 8 years.  Jason was an enigma to me.  I imagine in my head a SWAT officer being all alpha male and commanding.  While Jason is that, he is also emotional.  At times you can feel the emotion of sorrow rolling off of him.  His tears made me feel for whatever was tormenting him.

I also loved the sense of mystery in the novel.  Kassia has a stalker that is sending her threatening emails.  She wants to still live her life, but the alpha’s in her life are preventing her from leaving her house without an entourage.  For Kass, this is stifling.  As the story progresses, there were several times I wanted to guess who was the stalker.  And in the end I was totally off the rocker with my choices.

Readers who love a great romance with a taste of mystery to it will love My Guardian Angel.  And after reading the story I will tell you that the title fits perfectly.  I am looking forward to more from Evangelene.

Returning Home (Return to Me #4)

A.L. Parks

Genre: Contemporary / Adult / Romance

Release Date: October 28, 2014

Clarissa wants nothing to do with her father – even in his death. But she can’t escape returning to Newport to settle her father’s estate. The safe world she has established starts to crumble and secrets she has locked away threaten to be exposed. Meeting Griff, her father’s partner, provides the only peace and happiness in the darkness that suddenly surrounds her.

Griff has built his custom bike shop from nothing into a thriving success. After the sudden death of his silent partner, Griff finds himself in a fight to save his business from the grieving widow. But falling for his partner’s headstrong daughter may cost Griff everything.

Brandi has become accustomed to certain amenities in her life – money and men. She refuses to allow the death of her philandering husband to inconvenience her comfortable lifestyle. Setting her sights set on her husband’s very young, very sexy partner, nothing will get in the way of what she wants – even if it means destroying Clarissa to get it.

Returning Home by A.L. Parks is the fourth book in the Return to Me series.  The previous books were The Return (Jake and Eve’s initial story), Return to Newport (second part of Jake and Eve’s story), Lauren’s Return (Jake and Eve’s struggle for Lauren and being a family), and Returning Home (Clarissa and Griff’s story).  I would highly suggest you read the previous three books prior to reading Returning Home.

Return Home symbolized the need to return to your roots (people not places) when life is starting to fall apart. It is a hope that demons can be exorcized by having people around that love you and can accept you the way you are.  It also gives the reader the meaning that true love is worth fighting for.

Clarissa returns to Newport to handle her father’s estate.  Upon her arrival, she meets sexy custom bike mechanic, Robert Griffin (aka Griff).  In the will Clarissa and her sister are left fifty percent of the custom bike shop.  The deceased husband’s wife is really mad she didn’t get her claws into owning the business.

We all know about stereotypes.  In Returning Home Griff has it imprinted in his head that Clarissa is a rich snobby bitch.  He ends up being one rude dude to her, all because he believes she is someone that she in actuality is truly not.  How can Griff and Clarissa resolve their issues and move onto being business partners.

I can tell you that I have loved Clarissa throughout the whole series.  She is probably my favorite character.  She is so resilient, but yet vulnerability shows through at times.  She also contains the ability to love if she would ever allow herself to be open to the idea.  Clarissa is loyal to her mom and Amber.

The main conflict in the story revolved around secrets coming out threatening to cause casualties.  In order to circumvent this, the main characters must stand together and be united in pulling together.  The second conflict I saw was making a choice on whether to open yourself to love.  That is really hard to do when your heart has been shattered.

I truly enjoyed this story.  A.L. Parks has thrown another home run in her newest addition to the series.  I believe readers will be just as thrilled as I was after reading Returning Home.

He had his back to her completely unaware she was standing there. She was about to announce her presence, when she heard him singing softly along with the music. Her eyes travelled over his tight black t-shirt. The bike shop logo was imprinted on it, and pulled across the taut muscles of his back and the broadness of his shoulders. He had on worn jeans that looked as if they had permanent oils stains on them. They were faded and frayed, and formed perfectly to his body. He had an ass to die for, at least what she could tell from the way the jeans clung to the near perfect roundness of it.

How had she missed how hot this man was when she had seen him at her father’s house a day or two earlier?

He turned and caught sight of her standing in the doorway staring at him.

“How long have you been here?” he asked. There was no amount of cordiality in voice.

“Good morning to you, too,” she snapped back. “I just came in a minute ago.”

“Well, manners would dictate that you announce your arrival when you enter a room, or does your net worth prevent you from having manners?”

Whoa! What the hell?

“One, I was just about to say something when you turned around. Two, my net worth doesn’t prevent me from doing anything. In fact, it allows me to do pretty much whatever I damn well please.” She never flaunted her wealth, it made her uncomfortable. But Asshole had tripped her meter, and she wasn’t going to stand around and let him insult her. At least she remembered why she didn’t find him attractive. His mouth negated any sexy he had.

They stood starring at each other, neither backing down, each assessing the other’s formidability as a foe. There was no way she was going to let this jackass get the better of her. She dealt with men not giving her credibility simply because she was a woman. It was a load of crap and she was getting a little tired of having these pissing matches just to prove she could go toe-to-toe with a man.

He dropped his head, shaking it slightly. When he raised his eyes to hers, they were less hard. “Okay, truce. Let’s try this again. I was making coffee, and haven’t had a cup yet, obviously. Can I offer you one while I get some for myself?”

Dragging in a deep breath, she attempted to relax a bit. “Yes, that would be great, thanks.”

“Take anything in it? Sugar? Cream? We only have the powdered stuff, though.”

She took a step into the room, closing some of the distance between them. “Black, please.”

“Really?” he asked, cocking an eyebrow at her.

“Really. You learn quickly to drink it that way when you’re miles away from civilization with only a thermos and none of the extras. It’s a pain in the ass trying to add cream and sugar into a travel mug while perched in a tree getting a close-up of a nest of newborn birds before their mother comes back and starts pecking arms, hands…face. Black coffee is more conducive to those situations.”

He handed her a mug. His face was blank, but his eyes had softened and brightened a bit. Clarissa wasn’t sure what that meant, but he didn’t seem to be pissed at her anymore, so that was at least something.

“Yeah, I guess I’d switch to drinking it black, too.” He smiled, sending flutters through Clarissa that invaded her stomach. The smile, along with the beautiful eyes, where enough to make her forget her own name. Sweet, but in a sexy way. And Clarissa was sure no man had ever smiled at her that way in her life. He looked away, snapping her back to reality.

Get a grip, girl. You do not fall for men like him that can’t decide if they resent you or just want to fuck you.

“I guess we’ve never been properly introduced. Robert, right? Or do you go by Rob?”

“Neither. Griff,” he said, and left it hanging there like unfinished business.

“Griff?” she asked with a touch of disdain she hadn’t intended.

His eyes went dark and flat. “Yeah, Griff. Not quite as sophisticated as Clarissa, but we can’t all be as high and mighty as you.”

“Were you born with that chip on your shoulder, or is it something you’ve cultivated over time?”

“Just calling it like I see it, sweetheart.” He walked past her and out the door.

“Maybe you should look into getting some glasses, then,” she murmured, following him down the hallway and into the office. He pointed to an empty chair as he made his way behind the desk and sat down.

“Let’s just get this over with so you can be on your way back to merry ol’ England.”

“That sounds lovely, Robert.”

Author Bio

5105090Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains, A.L. Parks has spent the last 25 years moving all over the United States. Married to the Navy – well a man in the Navy – Parks has lived in various places throughout the United States. She currently resides in the Washington D.C area, with her husband, four children, and one spoiled German Shepard.

2013 marked her debut in publishing. Her first novel, Strangers, released on her 45th birthday. She was amazed at how many people fell in love with a story about two people dealing with grief, and finding love again. Abby and Bryce were the perfect couple to introduce Parks as an up-and-coming author.

She released the first of the Return To Me series (an anticipated 4.5 book series) in December 2013. A wonderful Christmas romance, The Return introduced readers into the whirlwind romance of Eve and Jake, and proved that second chance romance can be even better than first love. Book two, Return To Newport, followed the struggles that come while on a journey to happily ever after.

Parks unique style of writing, along with her depth of characters and emotions, is carving out a niche in romance for those who crave love and romance a second time around. While many current novels focus on first love, Parks’ novels seek to find happily ever after when first love has failed. They are a testament to second chances at true love that lasts forever.

All Broke Down by Cora Carmack Release Day Launch + Giveaway

ABD RDL Banner

Title: All Broke Down

Author: Cora Carmack

Release Date: October 28,2014

In this second book in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack’s New Adult, Texas-set Rusk University series, which began with ALL LINED UP, a young woman discovers that you can’t only fight for what you believe in . . . sometimes you have to fight for what you love

Dylan fights for lost causes. Probably because she used to be one.

Environmental issues, civil rights, corrupt corporations, and politicians—you name it, she’s probably been involved in a protest. When her latest cause lands her in jail overnight, she meets Silas Moore. He’s in for a different kind of fighting. And though he’s arrogant and infuriating, she can’t help being fascinated with him. Yet another lost cause.

Football and trouble are the only things that have ever come naturally to Silas. And it’s trouble that lands him in a cell next to do-gooder Dylan. He’s met girls like her before—fixers, he calls them, desperate to heal the damage and make him into their ideal boyfriend. But he doesn’t think he’s broken, and he definitely doesn’t need a girlfriend trying to change him. Until, that is, his anger issues and rash decisions threaten the only thing he really cares about, his spot on the Rusk University football team. Dylan might just be the perfect girl to help.

Because Silas Moore needs some fixing after all.

I think I get it then. That decision I saw in her eyes back in the kitchen. That’s what this, what I’m about for her, too. I’m just another part of whatever rebellion she started earlier today. About doing what she wants, not what’s expected of her.

“We’re not talking about me, though,” she says. “So you went to meet your friend, and then what happened?”

She keeps her eyes down as she picks up the gauze and begins winding it snugly around the knuckles of one hand, and then the other.

“He said the wrong thing.”

“Which was?”

“Dylan.” Now it’s her that’s pushing too hard. I didn’t want to talk about things with my friends, and I won’t talk about them with her, either, no matter how gorgeous she is.

“I’ll guess. You were mad about what he did, and he wasn’t sorry.”

“This isn’t middle school, Pickle. He didn’t hurt my feelings. He said some shit he had no business saying, and it pissed me off. The end.”

“But you don’t think some of that anger stems from what you feel is a betrayal of your friendship?”

She finishes taping down the last of the gauze, but doesn’t let go of my hand.

“I think you’re analyzing me again. Making things more complicated than they are.”

“And I think you’re just a guy who doesn’t like to admit he has feelings.” She drags out the word, teasing me with some goofy smile on her face. I turn my hand over so I can clutch her wrist. I curlmy other bandaged hand around her waist and pull her closer.

“I feel plenty of things.”

The teasing stops. She swallows.

“I wasn’t talking about that kind of feeling.”

With her standing and me sitting, I’m eye level with her chest. I see the sharp rise and fall as she sucks in a breath. I want her in my lap again, straddling me this time.

“Doesn’t mean we can’t talk about that kind of feeling. Or experiment with it.”

“Is that Stella girl an ex?”

I cough, surprised. My throat twists uncomfortably, and it takes me a couple of solid breaths to get a hold on myself.

“Ah, no. Stella and I have never dated.”

“Have you—”

“Do you ever run out of questions?”

“Not ever.” She turns playful again, and I’m done doing this the careful way. If she wants a rebellion, I’ll be the one to give it to her. I want her against me, and I’m tired of waiting.

I pull her forward, insinuating my knees between hers, and her body naturally follows, settling across my thighs. Her lips part, but she catches herself before she gasps this time. I keep her steady with my hands at her waist and say, “I’ll make you a deal. A question for a kiss.”

Tentatively, she lays her palms against my shoulders. They rest there, her grip light and casual. She ponders my offer for a moment, and it drives me mad that she can do that while our hips are inches away from alignment.

“Okay then. Are you—”

I cut her off. “Not so fast, Dylan Brenner. I’ve already answered one question. We’ve got to settle up first.”

I wrap her braid around my hand like I’ve been waiting to do all night, and I use it to pull her head back just enough that I can crush my mouth against hers.

Brea quickly grabbed a glass of champagne from the bartender, desperately wishing it were a shot of Patron, turning to lean back against the bar and search for her producer, Garrett. He was nowhere to be found, but sure enough, the bane of her existence was striding toward her with purpose. Could a girl not catch a break? Downing the champagne in one unladylike gulp, she put her glass on the bar and waited for the showdown. It was bound to be a good one, if the first two were any indication. For once, she wasn’t going to shy away from him, figuring she needed to nip his arrogance in the bud now.

“Hey, darling.” Lance smirked at her, knowing he irritated her and doing it anyway. She smiled mockingly.

“Look who it is: Hollywood legend and actor extraordinaire.” She leaned closer, her lips a hair’s breadth away from his. She knew exactly what she was doing and knew she had him when those green eyes grew hazy with what was to come.

“Edgy, sexy as fuck, and just rough enough around the edges to seduce random girls in the back.” She moved, kissing his cheek softly before whispering in his ear, “Too bad you won’t ever get that shit from me.” She felt him tense at her words, but he kept quiet. She pulled back, laying her lips lightly on his before she leaned back to gauge his reaction. His eyes narrowed, realizing he played right into her hand, and he moved before she could guess what he was doing.

She found herself pinned between his arms against the bar, her body pressed against his tightly. She could feel his erection against her center, making her want to rub up and down his body. She didn’t have to move; he did it for her, holding her hostage with his piercing glaze. He rubbed once, twice, making her squirm in an unconscious bid to get closer. What started as her plan to put him on notice had backfired.

“You feel that?” He pressed his erection into her hips, pressing tiny kisses to her jaw. She bit her lip to resist the moan of pleasure. She was captivated and could do nothing except nod her agreement.

“Good. I want you to feel me, and know this—” he rocked against her again “—is all for you. I’m not like your other guys. I’m not nice, and it won’t be pretty. But you’ll beg.” He bit her ear lobe softly. She was burning up and about ten seconds away from hopping on the bar and spreading her legs for him before he jerked away from her. Brea stumbled from the loss of contact, embarrassed by her reaction to him, staring into green eyes flashing in anger.

“Listen, Brea, this ain’t a game. You want me? That’s fine. Jealous because you think I took some girl in the back room? I didn’t, by the way, when all I’ve seen for the past three days is you, but I got no problem with that either. But if you want to be a cocktease in the middle of a cocktail party? You better be prepared to follow through with what you’re promising.”

“I’m not like that,” she argued, irritated he continued to ignore what she said. Again.

“You’re not like what? Because the only two times we have really interacted you have been like that. So, who are you? America’s sweetheart or harlot?”
